Királyudvar (Kee-RYE-oohd-var).  Impossible to pronounce..yeah..hard to point to on a a map..sure..not had a wine made from Furmint...definitely.  But, what we don't know or haven't had often opens our minds and tastes to another dimension and continue our wine journey.   This is the best wine that you've never heard of.  And at under $20/btl worth grabbing 6 bottles to have on hand for any occasion. There are about 10 cases in the State.  Sounds like a lot, but we're buying a few here just for ourselves for the Holidays.  We suggest you do the same!Once one of the world’s most coveted and expensive wines, gracing the tables of kings and queens...Tokaji fell from grace.  Two world wars devastated Tokaji’s traditional European markets and left this hallowed region still under the veil of the Iron Curtain. However, with the passion and investment of a select few, the legend has been resurrected.  In 1997, Tony Hwang purchased what was perhaps the region’s crown jewel, Királyudvar (Kee-RYE-oohd-var)—which for centuries had supplied Imperial wine to the Hapsburgs.  The estate has prime holdings in the historical crus of Henye, Percze, Becsek, and the grand cru Lapis.

Informed by History Tony also owned the Loire Valley’s greatest Vouvray producer, Domaine Huet. The deep well of institutional knowledge there began to inform many decisions at Királyudvar, particularly a conversion to biodynamic viticulture. Tony has rekindled the legacy and paved the way for world-class dry, demi-sec, and sparkling wines with local varieties (just like Chenin Blanc from Vouvray): dream like efforts with incredible depth, viscous intensity and bright acidity.
92 pts WARobert Parker's Wine Advocate Sourced in top vineyards such as Percze, Henye, Becsek and Nyulászó, the golden-yellow 2016 Tokaji Furmint Sec (with 10% Hárslevelu) offers a super delicate and pure yet intense and honey-scented nose with floral and stony aromas. Fermented and aged in 500-liter Hungarian oak barrels, this is a medium-bodied yet intense and structured dry Tokaji with vivacious acidity, lots of tannin grip and mineral tension. There is a perfect touch of (a few grams of) sweetness that makes this tensioned 2016 round and sexy but also dense. An impressive dry Tokaji that is purer and leaner than the sweeter and more concentrated 2008 tasted next to it! Tasted in February 2019.
