Vinous 93 ~ Sourced from a single vineyard located at the bottom of Chinon's slope on alluvial/clay soils, the 2019 Chinon Les Grézeaux is currently a bit shy in terms of revealing its fruit flavors. It’s also a hint reductive with its smoky bacon characters, but that's unimportant. What matters is the core of fruit and excellent focus. It's very relaxed and fluid with mouthwatering acidity. The tannins are more serious than the front and midpalate would have suggested and betray a little grittiness. Aged 15 months in cement, this could be opened in one to two years, but the concentration and structure offer drinking over a decade.
STAFF PICK - DECEMBER 2021
One of the most pleasurable red wines of the Loire Valley, the Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux is from a unique parcel of sixty year-old Cabernet Franc vines near the bottom of the slope in Chinon. The grapes are harvested by hand of course and fermented with wild yeasts with zero SO2 added during vinification. Les Grézeaux always has an elegant silky texture and wonderful freshness, making it delicious as a young wine, combined with the ability to age beautifully for 20 years and more in good vintages. This vintage shows a dark black/purple color with quite floral blackberry and strawberry aromas, with a bit of earth, spice and citrus. Very silky and supple on the palate, great acidity with deep black fruits, a long finish and an undertone of chalk & graphite. This is a lovely "Les Grézeaux" and is highly recommended for early drinking or ten to twenty years of cellaring. Only a few cases came into the State!
