Murphys Wine Shop – Notes from the Tasting Panel 9/27
Bien Nacido Vineyard wines - 9/27/18
We tried these two wines yesterday and they were more than a bit interesting. From one of the Central Coast's most iconic vineyards, we tasted the Bien Nacido 2014 Estate Syrah and 2014 Estate Pinot Noir. After doing so, we decided to bring in the 2014 Estate Pinot Noir - it will be in the wine shop next week.
The 2014 Estate Syrah had a closed nose that didn’t give away many clues as to what lay in store for the palate. Though the wine is from the Santa Maria Valley, close in proximity to Santa Barbara, the Syrah vineyards there are 700 ft in elevation, making for a cool climate, less bombastic style Syrah. On the palate, the wine exhibits narrowly focused flavors of blueberry and clove interwoven within a framework of fine tannins and a shorter than expected finish.
The 2014 Estate Pinot Noir is a beautiful wine produced from a vineyard block nestled at 900 ft elevation in the Santa Maria Valley. On the nose, classic spicy black tea and dark fruit aromas jump out of the glass with hints of pepper. On the palate, bright acidity and soft tannins balance out the richness of the red fruit flavors. We look forward to having this wine available in the shop later this week!
