Les Champs de L'Abbaye Bourgogne Rouge 2017
One of the most passionate proponents of biodynamics in France, Alain Hasard ardently defends his lonely outpost of the Côtes du Couchois in the woods behind Santenay. The only one in his sub-region to farm like this, Alain farms some of the most healthy vines in France. On a recent visit in the middle of winter when there was not a leaf on a vine for miles, his vineyard was green, with flowers between the vines. He seeks above all an equilibrium with the surrounding forests and farmland. Alain is also one of the few to harvest by hand in the zone and still crushes all of his wines by hand with an old-fashioned press before letting them age slowly under his house. His yields are very low. The wines are bottled by hand (with a device from the 1920’s) and labeled by his Alain and his wife. This is as artisinal as it gets. The wines are stunning, beautiful, and elegant examples of Pinot Noir.
